DAY TWENTY-ONE - JAMIE HARRISON

Day Twenty-one | Jaime Harrison | South Carolina Senate
511 Sawbuck Patriots | $6516 pledged today | $148,026 donated overall

Team:

Thank you for your righteous anger and activism last night.

As you probably guessed from the erroneous email title supporting McGrath (with Harrison's name on it, instead), I finished the email you're reading now yesterday afternoon, after working on it sporadically through the day. I was planning to do family dinner/movies in the evening, and wanted a head start so I didn't need to get up early to write it Saturday morning.

And then the news came.

Last night was wrenching, agonizing, terrifying, mournful ... and then, after the weight of our collective loss sank in, extraordinarily motivating. Watching the reports of new record fundraising for D candidates across the country; seeing the Sawbuck Patriots self-report in $27,895 for McGrath (a race I wasn't sure I'd ask you to fund, but McConnell's grotesque, hypocritical politicization of RBG's death made it an unavoidable imperative), and seeing the sadness turn to resolve all over social media - that was extraordinary. In the face of almost inescapable gloom, our snap back towards action was commendable. (And what RGB would have wanted.)

I'm sorry for the late email this morning; the news of RBG's death has given us the largest single-day increase in Sawbuck Patriots membership, and I just finished adding in nearly fifty new names to our group. I haven't gone back and rewritten what's below; please understand it was completed before our hero passed away.

We've got little time between now and the election; let's not let up for a SECOND.

May Ruth Bader Ginsburg's memory be for a blessing.

________

First, from the mailbag:

Thank you all for getting in this fight with me! When I first got into this race last June this race was seen as Likely Republican and few people believed we could win, but we kept putting in the hard work and got support from grassroots donors around Iowa and across this country. Now, 45 days out from the election, we are in a tossup race and we appreciate all the help we can get to take back this seat and the whole US Senate.

Sawbuck Patriots - I am so grateful for your incredibly generous contributions! With your support, we are going to flip AZ-06 and provide the residents of this district with the quality representation that they deserve. You’re helping me to reach voters through TV ads, mailers, digital ads, and field organizers (virtually of course), and I cannot thank you enough. Our most recent poll has us up three points over Schweikert (my corrupt opponent), and I’m confident that your help will propel us to victory in November. Thank you!

THE SITUATION: South Carolina is a generally conservative state. There's no good way to paint it for Ds; it just is that way. (But remember, it's gorgeous, and the people are nice.) It's not fully impenetrable, and Dems can break through; the last time a D Senator served the state, it was 2005. But make no bones about it - it's a rare occurrence for a D to win a statewide race here.

But there are changes afoot. It's the ninth-fastest-growing state in the nation; in-migration from more progressive places is decreasing R registration advantage. There is a strong effort underway to register the over 400K unregistered African American voters in the state, who are very likely D voters. And in '16, Trump received fewer votes than Romney and previous R presidential candidates. Tough state, but good trends.

THE COMPETITION: Lindsey Graham. Spineless, hypocritical Lindsey Graham. Pretend-friend of all; world-class suck-up; possessed of an unmoored set of "principles" which he tosses out the window every time something more attractive comes along; over-the-top compliment-giver to Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., repeatedly pointing out What A Decent Guy Joe Is - but simultaneous endorser of the foulest President perhaps ever; fascism cheerleader, Constitution-abandoner; and so on.

He's a feckless and spineless and rudder-less wretch. He's a disgraceful weathervane who has a looooooooong list of personal issues we should all give him time to work out; we can give him an assist by unceremoniously and speedily booting this weasel from public life.

(Narrator voice: "Subsequent to this email being sent, the American Association Of Weasels filed a personal damages lawsuit against Alex Clemens for tarnishing their species' name through this rude association, suggesting that roundworms or hagfish would have been more apt comparisons.")

OUR CANDIDATE: Jaime Harrison. Born into a life with long odds, he's built character. Son of a single mother, he was raised by his grandparents in SC. He attended Yale and Georgetown Law, and came back home to teach high school. A former staffer for Jim Clyburn, Jaime also worked as a strategist for the Podesta Group, and in 2013, he became Chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party.

He's smart, experienced, prepared, a Democrat, and most importantly, he's not Lindsey Graham.

He's raised a substantial amount more $$$ than analysts thought possible; he's dragged this race from where handicappers had it (Solid Republican) to where it is now (Lean Republican); polls have had him within striking distance in recent weeks, and yesterday, a poll dropped showing these two gentlemen TIED. A month ago, I wasn't sure I'd put Mr. Harrison before you for consideration, as I promised you that I'd only offer up candidates with a real shot at victory - and his campaign has caught fire during that time. So NOW is the time to press the advantage. Because THE MATH SAYS HE CAN WIN.

Sawbuck Patriots, it’s go time: click HERE and send $10 (or more - and today would indeed be a good day to send more!) to Jaime's campaign. Our collective effort will invest $6516 today.
