THE SITUATION: CA-25 sprawls through north Los Angeles County and the San Fernando Valley, including the cities of Palmdale and Santa Clarita, amongst others. It's been held by Rs for most of the time since the '90s, but two years ago D Katie Hill won an election here.

And, as you might know, she chose to resign from Congress after intimate photos of here were published online, along with misconduct allegations being levied. And in the May 2020 special election called after her resignation, an R won the seat. The D he beat in that special, off-cycle election is back to reclaim the seat - EVERYONE votes in November, and the turnout numbers will be different.

The district is multi-ethnic, with 45% whites, 35% Latinx, and about 10% each of African-Americans and Asians. It's been slowly shifting, demographically, but like much of the rest of California, it is getting more progressive.

And because of the district, the incumbent has been rated by Roll Call as being one of the nation's top 10 most likely to lose his seat to a D. (Narrator voice: “Let’s prove Roll Call right, shall we?”)

THE COMPETITION: Mike Garcia is reading from the R playbook. His top issues, according to his website, are national security, lowering taxes, stopping welfare handouts, and imposing term limits on Congress. Prior to his run, he worked as an executive at Raytheon, and was a decorated fighter pilot. He wants to build the wall, is extremely anti-choice, says he's "not a fan" of Medicaid, and is working hard to stop socialism.

Cool.

OUR CANDIDATE: Christy Smith. The assemblywoman for the 38th District of California (most of the Santa Clarita Valley) attended district schools as a child. She's worked at the Department of Education as a policy analyst, and ran for and served two terms on the Newhall School District. Her list of endorsements run from NARAL to EQCA to educational unions to League of Conservation Voters to the Sierra Club to the Brady anti-gun campaign. She's been elected here multiple times, this district is eminently flippable, and we're gonna take a road trip to Southern California to help Assemblywoman Smith become Congresswoman Smith, because THE MATH SAYS SHE CAN WIN.
