THE SITUATION: In Irving, Texas, longtime R/Tea Party member of Congress Kenny Marchant has decided to quit the House. Marchant won by only three points two years ago, Trump got only 51% four years ago, and the evolving congressional district has become less than 50% white. This open-seat race is generally rated as a toss-up by handicappers, as a historically much greater R advantage has been whittled down to just a narrow R edge at present. This open seat represents a great chance for a D pickup.
THE COMPETITION: Until she resigned to run for Congress, Beth Van Duyne was appointed by Trump to a regional position at HUD. She is also the former mayor of Irving, Texas where she worked on super-important things like banning sharia law in Texas. (Narrator voice: there is no sharia law in Texas.)
OUR CANDIDATE: Our very first Sawbuck Patriot effort will be on behalf of Candace Valenzuela. She won a crowded and deeply contested D primary due to her magnetic skills as a candidate and the strength of her remarkable personal journey – which are encapsulated in this fantastic campaign video. (Tissues optional.) I have connected with her over the phone a couple times; she’s the real deal.
