Team:
THE SITUATION: Welcome to Charleston, Myrtle Beach and nearby environs. This is BEAUTIFUL country. (Seriously - go visit, once it's safe to do so. SO pretty.) Also, this area is traditionally red; until two years ago, an R had represented this district since the '80s. (No, silly. not the 1880s. But you could be forgiven for so assuming.) Bush Bush McCain Romney Trump, just like some other swing-y districts to which we've been paying attention, and yes - Trump's win was by a smaller margin than the others. The district has been represented by now-Senator Tim Scott, and sometimes-Presidential-candidate, sometimes-Governor-candidate, and hiking aficionado Mark Sanford (twice). This district is notorious!
THE COMPETITION: Nancy Mace is a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives (statehouse, not federal). A trailblazer, she was the first woman to graduate from The Citadel, and if you, like I, read Pat Conroy's The Lords Of Discipline as a teenager, you're having flashbacks right now and mumbling congratulations to her under your breath. BUT. In 2013, she decided to primary Senator Lindsey Graham for being somehow insufficiently conservative (cool, cool), is a climate change denier (cool... wait, what?), opposes a federal ban on offshore drilling in this coastal district (holonaminnithere), is staunchly anti-choice (mmmmhmmmm) and ACTUALLY WORKED AS A PAID STAFFER ON TRUMP '16.
(Narrator voice: “Make South Carolina Great Again, basically.”)
OUR CANDIDATE: Joe Cunningham. Elected in 2018 in a staggering upset in a district Rs thought they would not lose, Joe Cunningham flipped the switch. A guy who has worked as an ocean engineer and practiced construction law before running for congress, he's against offshore drilling, pro-choice, is one of those wonderfully annoying political voices on climate change who consistently say "I believe in science and scientists", and so on. Independent enough to vote against his own party on a congressional pay raise issue, but value-laden enough to say that he'll fight for equal pay for women (HOW IS THIS STILL EVEN A THING IN 2020, DAMNIT), he's well-suited for the district.
And speaking of the district, the Rs want it back. BADLY. There's a lot of money heading to Mace's campaign from PACs, and Cunningham isn't taking PAC money. So, fellow non-PAC-ten-dollar-voters, he needs money like ours. Let's give it to him, shall we, because THE MATH SAYS HE CAN WIN.
Sawbuck Patriots, it’s go time: click HERE and send $10 (or more!) to Joe’s campaign. Our collective effort will invest $4030 today.
