Dear Sawbuck Patriots--
On election night in 2018, we surprised the country with the biggest upset of the midterm elections. Our victory was the result of hard work, determination, and contributions from individuals like you.
This year, as the number one target in the country, our path to victory looks different. Now, more than ever, your contribution is essential to helping us protect this important seat and continuing our fight for practical solutions that strengthen Oklahoma and our Nation. I am deeply grateful for your investment in our work to hold Oklahoma’s 5th— we could not do this without you!
Kendra Horn
And here's today's race.
THE SITUATION: It's Alabama, folks - and like yesterday's effort with Rep. Horn, we're hoping to protect a Democratic incumbent in this quite red state. Make no mistake about it - in a year where the map has incumbent Rs in jeopardy all over the place, this is the only place where an incumbent D Senator is in danger of losing their seat. Alabama is a tough nut to crack for Ds; its statewide registration numbers are ... unfavorable, to put it lightly. The R has won every presidential race since ‘76. But our guy is the incumbent, and he's recently won a statewide race here, albeit against a more problematic opponent. This is a tough one, but there is indeed a narrow path to victory.
THE COMPETITION: Tommy Tuberville, the former football coach at Auburn (which is a college in Alabama, for you non-football-fans), is the R nominee. He supports Trump’s wall. He opposes Obamacare. He’s completely anti-choice and has been endorsed by the National Right To Life Committee. And perhaps worst of all, HE HIRED SEAN SPICER TO WORK ON HIS CAMPAIGN.
(Narrator voice: “That’s clearly not the worst of all.”)
While Tuberville's time coaching football at Auburn does indeed have some cachet to football-crazy residents (and voters!) in AL, there are some caveats* and asterisks* to that very broad brush. And while I’m assured by my excellent Alabama political counterparts that while most of the discussions are far too regional and granular for an elite coastal Yankee like me to ever understand, here’s one simple truth: if you’re a Alabama Crimson Tide fan, of which there are many in this state, it’s quite likely that you’ve screamed for Tuberville’s public hanging on many a football Saturday, in front of your friends and family. Which, in turn, might make it a wee bit harder for some to vote for him on Election Day.
OUR CANDIDATE: Doug Jones. Elected to the Senate in 2017 over ... oh, man, I can’t even start to describe the cartwheeling, flaming zoo that was the ‘17 Alabama Senate race. Just can’t. (Please don't make me go back to therapy by asking me to.) But long, sordid story short: Doug Jones won. And incumbents have advantages that challengers don’t. Doug’s not my idea of a perfect Senator, but my idea of a perfect Senator couldn’t get elected to the position of deputy assistant to the assistant dogcatcher in Alabama in 2020. Bottom line: Doug is a Democrat, and he votes with his caucus most of the time, and it’s important not to abandon our teammates this year.
This will likely be the longest shot I put before you, but still: THE MATH SAYS HE CAN WIN - HE CAN WIN. But he'll certainly need all the help he can get.
Sawbuck Patriots, it’s go time: click HERE and send $10 (or more!) to Doug’s campaign. Our collective effort will invest $3880 today.
