DAY FORTY-SEVEN - THE TEXAS STATEHOUSE

Day Forty-seven | the Statehouse | Texas
785 Sawbuck Patriots | $8486 pledged today | $438,098 donated overall

Team:

To the Sawbuck Patriots-

Grassroots donors like you are the foundation of our campaign. When my team shared with me that you all chose to support our campaign, I was overjoyed. I know we wouldn’t be in the position we are today without your generosity. I always tell my staff and volunteers: you can never thank people enough -- so thank you!

Elise Stefanik has a war chest of special interest money, but because of you, we have made this race competitive, and in November, we are going to win! My team will follow up with the total amount of contributions you helped us raise, but if you’d like to connect further and learn more about our campaign, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

With Gratitude and Hope,

Tedra Cobb

THE SITUATION: On Monday, we invested in the increasing blueness of Kansas  by teaming up with NY4US. Our investments will help two smart, motivated women Kansas get elected to the statehouse - part of a long-term play to build a foundation for expanded political sanity in the Sunflower State. Now we’re teaming with NY4US again, and we’re aiming at Texas with the same aspirations.

Due to demographic changes and trends, Texas will certainly go Presidentially blue in the next few cycles. There’s a shot to get it there this year – a long shot, but a shot. (Nate Silver has 48% of Texas going for Biden right now, and Trump at 51.1% - that will probably hold, but ... anything's possible in 2020.) And whether it flips this year or in coming years, the best way to set it up for future blueness is to build the TX Democrat bench. (All while identifying, educating and turning out voters that help the up-ticket races for President, House and Senate...)

Two years ago, in a shocking but welcome turn of events, the TX House (state, not federal!) flipped twelve of their one hundred fifty seats from Rs to Ds. THis year, we’re nine seats away from actually turning this house blue, TX Ds are focusing on districts that extremely popular TX congressman Beto O’Rourke carried in ’18 - those are districts where our statehouse candidates can win locally, as well. There are fantastic candidates for those seats running on public education, women's rights, access to affordable healthcare, and – super-importantly this year – protecting everyone’s right to vote.

And on October 20, we’ll be doing another Zoom with two great candidates running for the Texas House of Representatives – and our special guest for this call will be none other than Beto O’Rourke himself. If you donate $100, you’re automatically invited to the Zoom. If you donate less and would like to come, I’ll get you into the lottery to take one of the available chairs. (For Kansas, everyone who asked for a seat got one – so don’t be shy. If you want to hang with Beto and these candidates - tell me what you donated, that you'd like to come, and your name goes in the hat!)

The excellent candidates that NY4US has vetted and selected:

  • Natali Hurtado (HD-126) became a single mother at 19, and relied on the support of her family and social assistance to ultimately earn a Masters of Public Policy and Administration. As a Latina, mother and businesswoman, Natali is committed to making sure Latinos, women and working families have their voices heard. In the COVID-19 era, Natali is running to ensure that our kids and their teachers can return safely to their classrooms, to improve access to healthcare for all, and to fight for economic opportunities for individuals and local businesses.

  • Akilah Bacy (HD-138) has a long track record of working tirelessly to improve the lives of working people and vulnerable community members. A former Harris County Assistant District Attorney and current pro bono immigration attorney for children seeking asylum, Akilah is running to address her community’s challenges, such as access to education, affordable healthcare, climate change, employment rights and restorative justice.

And on October 20, join them, NY4US, some of your fellow Sawbuck Patriots, and former congressman Beto O’Rourke, who will tell us how 2020 could be the year that Texas can flip, the enormous value of what’s at stake, and how to help make our long-held blue Texas dream a reality. THE MATH SAYS THEY CAN WIN.

Sawbuck Patriots, it's go time: click HERE to send $10 (or more!) to Akilah and Natali's campaign. Our collective effort will invest $8486 today.

Thank you!
