DAY THIRTY-ONE - KATE SCHRODER

Dear *|FNAME|*:
THE SITUATION: Today we're in OH-01 - hello, Cincinnati! This is the southwest side of Ohio, in a district that shares borders with Kentucky and Indiana. It's seventy percent white, twenty-two percent black, and ninety-two percent urban. It’s a lean R district with their team holding about a five point advantage. It’s not R bedrock, however; Obama won here in ’08 by more than ten points. At present, Biden is winning this district 50%-45%, even though Mr. $750 In Taxes took the district by six points four years ago.
And of interest, Ohio’s congressional districts are just as gerrymandered as North Carolina’s, which some of us got to read about during our Ricky Hurtado day some time back. (Send Ricky more money!) Every year since 2011, this slight-R-advantage state has sent twelve Republicans and four Democrats to Washington, DC. And yes, a panel of federal judges ruled that it (like NC) was unconstitutionally gerrymandered, just like what happened in NC. The professional handicapper class has this from Lean R to toss-up.
THE COMPETITION: Steve Chabot is a twelve-term Congressman. However, those twenty-four years in Congress haven’t helped him figure some stuff out. Chabot: “the evidence concerning man-made climate change is far from conclusive.” (I write this as ash falls on my vicinity from a fire sixty miles away that went from a spark to eleven thousand acres in thirty hours.) Steve Chabot wants Ohio high schools to teach intelligent design. Chabot would like to repeal Obamacare, and has a record of over 50 votes to tear it down. And just for fun, please be aware that Rep. Chabot is voting in line with Trump’s positions 95% of the time.
(Narrator voice: “No word yet as to whether Chabot only paid $750 in taxes like his hero.”)
Chabot only won by four points two years ago, barely besting a D who was already damaged by a campaign finance scandal. And this, year, Chabot’s own campaign consultant (who also was his former chief of staff) has been under investigation for stealing campaign funds, which is dragging down Chabot's race. Oopsie!
OUR CANDIDATE: Kate Schroder is a cancer survivor who’s worked as a healthcare advocate for over a decade, serving on the Cincinnati Board of Health and serving as the VP of the Clinton Health Access Initiative. She grew up in Cincinnati, and worked as a staffer for Senator Evan Bayh and for a member of the Cincinnati City Council.
She’s got a Wharton MBA (one that she probably earned herself, rather than paying other people to take her tests for her, DONALD), and she's got experience from working in Zambia for a couple years, serving the people there with a pediatric HIV clinic and delivering improved lab services. She’s got great stands on gun safety and background checks, expanding healthcare, stopping the epidemic of opioid abuse, ensuring education and childcare opportunities, supporting women, LGBTQ+ people, seniors, and veterans.
Schroder’s most recent polls have her up by a couple points on the increasingly unpopular Chabot, reversing trends from early this year, when Chabot’s lead looked unlikely to be eroded. She is suffering from a slight cash-raised and cash-on-hand deficit, as this race is less on the radar of national handicappers than some other, more high-profile candidacies.
And here at Sawbuck Patriots, we know how to help close that gap – and we will, because THE MATH SAYS SHE CAN WIN.
Sawbuck Patriots, it’s go time: click HERE and send $10 (or more) to Kate's campaign. Our collective effort will invest $7643 today.
Thank you.
