Team:
Today we’re attempting to do some magic with your money in the critical, key, can’t be overstated, super-important, get-out-the-thesaurus-for-even-more-superlatives state of North Carolina. (Seriously. NC is that important. When starting Sawbuck Patriots, I considered focusing this effort on just North Carolina, Wisconsin, and perhaps one other state, but decided too many folks would take a pass because of the narrowness of my program.)
Even so, we aim our funds today at NC House District 63, which I'm sure you're ALL quite familiar with. (Of course you aren't. Neither am I!) But as you'll see, the specifics of the district aren’t as important (sorry, NC-63 residents - we do love you!) as the overall political situation found in NC. Let’s discuss that, shall we?
North Carolina is a critical state for multiple good reasons. First, the state’s electoral votes are in play for the Presidency - they could go either way. Second, there’s a competitive Senate race in NC. And third, and perhaps most importantly, this state has been terribly gerrymandered (which means redistricted with bias) by Rs. On a state where close to half the votes are Ds and half the votes are Rs, their really clever and effective congressional redistricting map resulted in ten out of thirteen NC House seats being held by Rs, as they’ve been drawn to put as many Ds as possible in three districts, and give all the other ones slight R leads. Bastardry, I tell you!
And no, I’m not just making those whiny political noises that folks who lose a political battle sometimes make about how We Wuz Cheated - nope, this was flat-out BS. Don't take my word for it: North Carolina courts, a federal court, and the SUPREME COURT have all ruled that the Republican 2010 congressional redistricting of North Carolina was an unlawful, race-based gerrymander. That's right: in 2017, the John Roberts Supreme Court basically said “hey there North Carolina Republicans you went and created a race-based political map that gave Republicans an unfair advantage.”
And, of course, the map's about to be redrawn, which it is, once a decade. And NC Rs have shown that they can't be trusted with the pen.
So we're supporting Ricky Hurtado. He's a really smart, hard-working guy with an Master of Public Administration from Princeton, from an immigrant family, who has worked as a non-profit exec, is an instructor at UNC Chapel Hill, and is focusing on kitchen-table platform issues like healthcare and the living wage. He's running against an incumbent who has voted against protecting his constituents who have pre-existing conditions, and against expanding Medicaid during a pandemic.
When you send him money, you're doing SIX things with that dough.
You're investing in the North Carolina House race that's been deemed most competitive. (The math says he can win, and should, with our help.)
You're getting get a great D INTO OFFICE.
You're REMOVING an R with an unhelpful voting record.
You're supporting FAIR REDISTRICTING in a state that has Supreme-Court-Certified Racist Districts. (And which is scheduled to get one additional seat in the House - fourteen in total - due to population changes.)
You're turning out more Ds to vote in a state with a COMPETITIVE SENATE RACE.
You're turning out more Ds to vote in a state with a COMPETITIVE PRESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENT.
And, of course, your dollars in THIS race are making a greater impact than when we spend them on, say, a US Senate race, as fewer bucks head to these smaller-scale races, so our $4000+ makes a bigger impact for Ricky and his team.
(Narrator voice: “Every dollar gets bigger and does six things. It’s ... it's magic!")
