DAY SEVEN - WENDY DAVIS

Day Seven | Wendy Davis | TX-21
311 Sawbuck Patriots | $3430 pledged today | $20,390 donated to candidates

Team:

We crossed the threshold of 300 candidates. My contributions have moved up to $70/day because of you getting the word out. Thanks - and I'll bump up again when we get to 400...

THE SITUATION: It's pretty red in the Texas 21st, covering parts of Austin and areas north of San Antonio. It's only been represented by Republicans since the '70s - and, of course, they've all been guys. Presidential: Bush, McCain, Romney, Trump. Not an ideal story from 30,000 feet. But hold on. Bush won the district with 66% in '04 - and Trump was down to 52% in '16. The demographic trends are good, and real.

THE COMPETITION: Chip Roy is the freshman Republican representative. A limited-government conservative, I give him credit for sticking to his guns - but what guns they are! He was one of just eleven members of the 425-member House of Representatives to vote against the second round of COVID-19 relief, because it mandated sick leave provisions. I mean, even the President supported this bill. Come on, man! He's being strongly supported by Club for Growth, the deep-pocketed, super-conservative national organization. This is widely considered to be a "top-five, must-protect" district for the R team. So we need a strong candidate to return him to private life, yes?

(Narrator voice: "Yes.")

OUR CANDIDATE:  Wendy Davis. You know her name from her nationally famous 2013 thirteen-hour statehouse filibuster to block an overly restrictive abortion bill in Texas. Having sat out of frontline politics since 2014, she's returned to take on Chip and flip the district. She's got lots of TX-progressive platform planks (when compared to, say, CA-progressive ones!), but they're not only palatable to many in her district, they're helping set her apart from her competition. Carbon neutrality by 2050, red flag laws to curb mass shootings, public healthcare option, expand Medicaid, universal background checks, and the like. And she's pro-choice, where her opponent is one of the hardest-line anti-choice incumbents you'll find.

Both Rs and Ds are pouring dough into this district, because both sides know they can win here. So it's time for us to step up. The polling data shows a close race; national handicappers have her within the margin of victory, and Wendy Davis herself is a remarkably compelling and skilled candidate.

So, let's all say it together: THE MATH SAYS SHE CAN WIN.
