DAY FIFTY-FIVE - JACKIE GORDON

From the mailbag:

Thank you so much to the Sawbuck Patriots for going the extra mile to help my campaign to represent Colorado's Third Congressional District. We have a toss up here in Colorado and need your help to combat the $1.2 million dollars that Boebert's dark money groups just poured into CD3. Again, thank you so much for your support! Let's get this done, together.
- Diane Mitsch Bush

TWO ARTICLES: I thought these two related articles might be of interest to you, because they are ABOUT you, you super-famous mover and shaker. In the first (and yes, I am linking to a Fox News story on purpose!), Senator Disgraceful Weathervane wonders whether all these small donations to his opponent are actually fraud, and in the second, NPR journalists emphatically answer that question.

THE SITUATION: Back to NY. We're in the fightin' second district, which is mostly South Shore of Long Island. A relatively wealthy, completely urban district, it's 60% white, 24% Latino, and 10% Black. This district has voted for Ds five out of the past seven Presidential elections, but went for Trump last time around.

The incumbent, who is retiring from Congress, has been in Congress since 1993. Annnnnnd, that's enough about outspoken Trump supporter Peter King.

THE OPPOSITION: Andrew Garbarino. He's been in the NY Assembly since 2013, and since he's in NY, not only is he a Republican, he also represents the Conservative Party, the Libertarian Party, and the Serve America Movement Party. (I know, I know. Ask your NY and your MN friends about the multiple parties and the DFL thing. I know.)

He's SO distinguished himself with exciting achievements (I'm being sarcastic) that his Wikipedia page is a hilariously spare construct, including this knee-slapper of a full sentence: "Garbarino was born." Cool cool, Garbarino's mom; you put in some solid work there. (And as a staffer, I blame staff for this. This isn't something good staff should allow to happen. Step it up, Team Garbarino. Step it up.)

He's ... colorless. He's excited about being endorsed by outgoing Rep. Peter King, and about Backing the Blue, having fun blaming China for COVID-19, and being staunch about fighting opioid abuse. He's been endorsed by a lot of law enforcement organizations, and ... yeah. That's mostly it.

Most politicians get a great deal of stuff about themselves out into the universe; the record on this fellow is just spectacularly thin.

OUR CANDIDATE: Jackie Gordon. She was born in Jamaica (see, Andrew, she WASN'T JUST SIMPLY BORN like you were, buddy!) and came to the US when she was seven. She worked in NYC and Long Island public schools for 32 years as a teacher and guidance counselor, joined the US Army when she was twenty, was deployed and served four overseas tours of duty: in Desert Storm, after 9/11, to Baghdad as a Battle Captain, and as the Commander of the 310th MP Battalion in Afghanistan in 2012. She retired after 27 years of military services as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2014. She was elected to the Babylon, NY Town Council in 2006. And she's fearless; she visited King and told him she was running against him BEFORE he had decided to retire. (Did he perhaps take their conversation as a hint that perhaps he needed to hang up his spurs before someone did it for him?)

Jackie Gordon in a solid D in a somewhat conservative district, with a nuanced set of positions that place her squarely in the midst of the Democratic party, and in a way that allows Ds and thoughtful independents to wholeheartedly support her candidacy. The NRCC and the DCCC have both prioritized NY-02, as the Rs know that losing King's seat would be an embarrassment, and the Ds think they can pick it up. Polls have our team up by a touch; she's doing well in the fundraising department, neither a woman nor a person of color has never served in this seat, and THE MATH SAYS THAT JACKIE CAN WIN.

Sawbuck Patriots, it's go time: click HERE to send $10 (or more!) to support Jackie's campaign. Our collective effort will invest $8736 today.

Thank you!
