THE SITUATION: Montana, and Montana's politics, are both quirky, compared to some others states. It holds just over a million people, 90% of whom are white, and 6% of whom are First People), its 43rd in population while being the fourth largest state. Only Alaska and Wyoming have fewer people per square mile – so there’s room to roam. While the state votes for Rs for President (since ’52, only Johnson in ’64 and Clinton in ’92 have won here), at least one of its two Senators has been a D since 1982. The Governor and LG right now are Ds.

As you can see, split tickets are certainly a thing here, so while Trump is strongly favored to win the state over Biden, the Senate race could go either way. Iconoclastic, those Montanans.

THE COMPETITION: Go visit Steve Daines’ website, if you’re feeling strong enough to do so. The enormous splash page photo is of Trump speaking and Steve Daines grinning maniacally whilst basking in Trump’s awesomeness. Signs that say “Finish The Wall” and “Keep America Great” are everywhere, along with some familiar red hats.

Seriously: this personality cult is tiring me right the F out. But back to Daines.

Daines, a first-term senator and former member of Congress, likes guns, is anti-choice, has praised Trump’s COVID-19 response, suggests the Federal Department of Education be abolished, opposes universal marriage, opposes net neutrality, has voted to repeal the ACA, and denies that people are responsible for climate change.

I don’t care for him at all. Nor, I would guess, do you.

OUR CANDIDATE: Montana Governor Steve Bullock – a proven Montana commodity. Twice governor, once attorney general, and (for a while) a Presidential candidate, he’s raising more money than Daines, and he’s got high name recognition. Polls have gone back and forth quite a bit here – both Daines and Bullock have been in the lead, and the race is in the margin of error right now.

Steve Bullock - the GOOD Steve, if you will - is getting traction on the environment issue. More Montanans are noticing that climate change is a human-affected phenomenon than have in previous years. While Bad Steve is attempting to burnish his enviro cred, his unwillingness to admit that temperature rise is substantially Our Fault and we Need To Do Things is becoming a liability.

Bad Steve is a touch ahead in the polls today, but that’s seesawed over and over again during this year. Let’s push the pendulum back in the other direction, shall we? Because THE MATH SAYS THE GOOD STEVE CAN WIN.
