DAY FIFTY-TWO - MOE DAVIS
Day Fifty-two | Moe Davis | NC-11
792 Sawbuck Patriots | $8676 pledged today | $489,556 donated overall
Team:
Should current trends continue, as they most likely will, early next week we will see a new peak of daily C-19 infections in the USA. We will likely see MUCH higher daily infection rates than before, far surpassing the previous peak of 67K new infections/day set back in July.
Please stay safe, mask up, keep socially distant, wash your hands, and don't allow the fatigue that defines 2020 to allow your guard to drop. Please remind your those in your orbit who are vulnerable, more eager to be active and social, and who have ... different levels of judgment that they must remain vigilant as well. And send comforting thoughts to those who work in healthcare - their stress will be extreme.
Thank you.
THE SITUATION: Hello again, North Carolina. Yes, you certainly are of outsize importance this year. We’re in the Fightin’ Eleventh District today (yes, I said "fightin’" again - I am reliably informed that one must say “fightin’ thirty-eighth" or whatever, just to keep it all hilariously old-school...)
This is one of those gerrymandered NC districts (which includes the city of Asheville) that have gotten NC Rs in trouble for making things unfair. Boundaries have been drawn and redrawn so frequently in recent years that people on the SAME BLOCK wonder which district they’re in - across the street was us, and then them, and is back to us again... it’s nuts.
This seat is vacant right now, and the residents there are suffering taxation without representation, because their former Representative went and lost his mind because when Donald Trump snuggled up close to him and said “hey there Mark Meadows would you like to be my chief of staff because it’s early 2020 and everything’s going just fine and I'm gonna get super-re-elected bigly and my former Chiefs of Staff loved the job SO much even though I fired all of them and you'd be SO great at this job which consists of saying 'sure thing boss' so it's easy just like presidenting is easy all you have to do is yell MAGA and FAKE NEWS and do rallies” and then he shook Meadows' hand SUPER-hard and then Meadows said “sure thing boss” because of the cult stuff and resigned his hard-won seat in Congress on March 30, 2020 just in time to see the world lurch COMPLETELY off its axis and watch his new boss lie through his teeth about a horrifyingly deadly virus and to realize he'd voluntarily jettisoned his once-promising political career to nursemaid the final nine months of a tyrannical and inept fascist’s career and tie their names together in perpetuity forever and ever amen.
(Sweet move, Beavis.)
THE COMPETITION: Madison Cawthorn just turned 25. He won a tough R primary for this seat; kudos to him for that. Many of you may know that he is wheelchair-bound, as he tragically suffered a paralyzing injury in a car accident. Post- accident, he won a job as a staff assistant in Congressman Meadows’ office. (He did that instead of graduating from college, as he said his low grades resulted from his accident, which interfered with his ability to learn.) On the side, he owns a real estate investment firm, with zero income and zero employees. But he can give a nice speech, and sound pretty damn compelling, especially when considering his age and experience. (Really - I've listened.)
Importantly, some of you may have also heard about his Instagram posts of his vacation visit to Eagle's Nest, better known as Adolph Hitler’s vacation home. If you haven't, you should, because I’m sure many of you also would consider that a great vacation spot to seek out and then post about on the Instagrams, as one generally does, I suppose.
I’m personally impressed that Cawthorn has battled back against his terrible injuries, and has pushed his life forward. But I like my congressional candidates with more than an inspirational personal story and a glib stump speech - this young gentleman has a comedically thin resume.
(Narrator voice: "Our guy doesn't.")
OUR CANDIDATE: USAF Colonel Morris (Moe) Davis is an attorney, educator, and former administrative law judge. He was appointed as the Chief Prosecutor of the Guantanamo military commissions, where he served from 2005-07. Not one to rest on laurels or coast, he refused to use evidence obtained through torture when he was ordered to, and loudly and emphatically quit his position - out of principle.
He’s part of an unfortunately unusual breed: a liberal guy wearing a uniform covered with insignia of hard-earned, high-level military rank. He has stood firm for a variety of progressive principles, gaining him endorsements not just from the rank and file of D leaders in NC and across the nation, but also from hard-core civil rights leaders and constitutionalists like Lawrence Tribe. He’s been at the forefront of the fight against Trump in NC, battling him publicly at every turn. And when he decided to run for Congress, it unfortunately seemed that it would be a windmill-tilt.
Because for the longest time, this race wasn’t even close - whomever succeeded Meadows as the R nominee was certain to win it all, said all the experts six months ago. And four months ago. And two months ago. But based on recent polling, energy and intensity, and Moe's great campaign (and a few self-inflicted blunders by Cawthorn), it’s moved into the GETTABLE range.
And Sawbuck Patriots, you all know what to do when THE MATH SAYS HE CAN WIN.
Sawbuck Patriots, it's go time: click HERE to send $10 (or more!) to support Moe's campaign. Our collective effort will invest $8676 today.
Thank you!
